Late Miocene - Quaternary forearc uplift in southern Peru: new insights from 10Be dates and rocky coastal sequences

چکیده

We explore the coastal morphology along an uplifting 500 km-long segment of Central Andes, between cities Chala (Peru) and Arica (Chile). use accurate DEM field surveys to extract sequences uplifted shorelines study area. In addition, we consider continental pediment surfaces that limit both geographical vertical extent marine landforms. establish a chronology based on published dates for landforms surfaces. expand this corpus with new 10Be data shore platforms. The last 12 Ma are marked by three periods stability or subsidence dated ~12-11 Ma, ~8-7 ~5–2.5 ago. uplift accumulated these has been ~1000 m since 11 Ma; its rate can reach 0.25 mm/a (m/ka). For period only, during 800 ka, forearc accurately recorded carving numerous sequences. Within sequences, correlated terraces sea level highstands (interglacial stages sub-stages) up MIS 19 (790 ka), i.e., resolution ~100 ka. increases westward from 0.18 at Peru-Chile border ~0.25 in center It further northwestward, 0.45 mm/a, due influence Nazca Ridge. study, document unusual cyclic ~4 Ma-long cycles. This periodicity corresponds predictions made Menant et al. (2020) numerical models, could be related episodic tectonic underplating (subducting slab stripping) beneath

New Quaternary Sequences with Ideal Autocorrelation Constructed from Legendre Sequences

In this paper, for an odd prime p, new quaternary sequences of even period 2p with ideal autocorrelation property are constructed using the binary Legendre sequences of period p. For the new quaternary sequences, two properties which are considered as the major characteristics of pseudo-random sequences are derived. Firstly, the autocorrelation distribution of the proposed quaternary sequences ...

36. Late Miocene Paleoenvironments and Tectonic Setting of the Southern

During drilling of Leg 160 in the Eastern Mediterranean (April−May, 1995), Messinian (i.e., uppermost Miocene) facies were identified at a site at the base of the Cyprus slope (Site 968) and at two sites on the Eratosthenes Seamount (Sites 965 and 967). The new results can be compared with the recovery of Messinian evaporites from the Florence Rise west of Cyprus (Deep Sea Drilling Project Site...

Late Quaternary Fossil Mammals and Last Occurrence Dates From Caves at Barahona, Puerto Rico

—Puerto Rico supported at least five genera of endemic terrestrial mammals in the late Quaternary, all of which are extinct. Whether these animals died out in the late Pleistocene, the mid-Holocene, or in post-Columbian time has not been established. This paper is the first attempt at radiometrically dating the ‘last occurrences’ of these taxa, together with the first unambiguous descriptions o...

Miocene orographic uplift forces rapid hydrological change in the southern central Andes

Rainfall in the central Andes associated with the South American Monsoon and the South American Low-Level Jet results from orographic effects on atmospheric circulation exerted by the Andean Plateau and the Eastern Cordillera. However, despite its importance for South American climate, no reliable records exist that allow decoding the evolution of thresholds and interactions between Andean topo...

Airesites: a New Class of Late Miocene Tektites from Argentina

Introduction: We report the discovery of two tektites (Fig. 1A) collected in the vicinity of Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires Province (BPA), Argentina. The smaller tektite (T2) has an elongate, teardrop form ~2 mm long. The larger one (T1) appears to be a classic disc-shaped tektite ~2 mm in diameter. Both are black in reflected light and exhibit the grooved and pitted surface sculpting common to te...
